Science has made a tremendous impact on human welfare. It has developed the world to near perfection, with instant comforts. Nevertheless, people are not as happy as they should be. Their worries escalate daily and they end up in a state of depression. Presently, this is the status of most Children in Sri Lanka. . Depression may be one of the leading causes of death in the coming decades.
WHAT CAN WE DO FOR THIS?
To a greater extent, this is due to globalisation & modernisation, but are these the only causes? The root of the problem may be the way the students are brought up in their lives. Petting them too much during their childhood may be the main reason for this crisis.
This is one aspect of my article and the other issue is that the present status of most of the students is that they do not speak in their Mother language fluently as well as disrespect their Parents, Teachers, Elders, Religion and Culture.
What a pity! What can we do?
Parents play a pivotal role in the upbringing of their children. They must act as their role models. They should mould their children to be good citizens of our Motherland.
Parents, Elders, School Principals, Administrators, Spiritual leaders and Religious leaders, Teachers, NGO’s, Media, Society, Health Minister and the Government play a “focal role in creating awareness” on the deadliest outcomes of cigarette smoking, narcotics and alcohol consumption. Hence, we must take the corrective actions now, swiftly. It is not too late.

In life, sometimes we get what we want immediately, sometimes there will be a delay in getting what we want, sometimes we may not get what we aimed for and sometimes we gain unexpectedly.
For example, if you pedal a cycle, it will move instantly. Here, the action and result are seen simultaneously. If you throw a rubber ball at the wall, it will come back into your hands within a few seconds. In this scenario, a relative time delay is shown in the result to happen. Another scenario is that you plant a seed now and you have to wait patiently for years to reap the benefits in the form of fruits.
Hence, if we do not get results immediately, there is no need to panic or be stressed out. Rather, you focus only on the action and expect the benefits. By having this mindset, you can easily avoid stress or depression. Remember, we need to have a certain amount of stress to propel us into action.
A HUMBLE APPEAL TO OUR LEADERS TO CREATE FURTHER AWARENESS AND PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH AMONG SRI LANKANS
While more psychiatric wards are allocated for the patients who are suffering from psychiatric illnesses, I would greatly appreciate it if our National leader and the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education could kindly consider setting up more counseling centres in all government and private hospitals, in Sri Lanka.
Most importantly the government should kindly consider to implement strategies for the “Primary Prevention of depression” with the involvement of Medical professionals and practitioners, School Principals, Administrators, Teachers, Spiritual and Religious leaders, Media including the Print Media, for the children, to lead a healthy, serene, tranquil, fulfilled, rewarding, highly productive and highly successful school career, work and life.
ROLES AND DUTIES OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS IN SCULPTING, MOULDING AND CRAFTING FUTURE LEADERS
The parents, educators and teachers should inculcate values, discipline and “good and correct attitudes” among children. They should play a pivotal role in being an example of a good disciplinarian and follow the “ethics” and lead a “happy, joyful and modest life”. So that when children grow up in the society, they will follow the footsteps of their parents and teachers, thus becoming valuable and moral and worthy citizens of our Motherland.
I humbly request our Prime Minister and the Minister of Education to kindly consider introducing “ ethics” and “values” as part of the school curriculum. More importantly, the respective Mother language, Religion and literature should be made as compulsory subjects in schools, starting from Grade one.
