Mi Oya sand smuggling operation busted

The Anamaduwa Police arrested two suspects and seized a lorry, boats, and other equipment in a raid carried out on an years-long sand smuggling operation along the Mi Oya in Maha Uswewa this week.

The operation, active at Kolaniya Ferry and Waragolla Ferry, allegedly involved bribing high-ranking police officers. Smugglers used boats for dredging and spies were stationed at Uswewa Junction to monitor police movements.  During the raid, a spy was also arrested.

Illegal sand mining had caused significant environmental damage, including the collapse of Kumbuk trees into the river.

Around 10 suspects fled during the operation, but the two arrested residents of Maha Uswewa are to be presented to the Anamaduwa Magistrate’s Court.
