Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has sought permission from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) to make a representation regarding the allegations against him over the misappropriation of funds while he was serving at the Fertiliser Corporation in 2015, a senior official said.

The request had been made through a President’s Counsel.

However, the Commission has informed Mr Jayakody that if required, he could make his representations in writing.

The Sunday Times learns that the process of filing action against the minister will likely be further delayed due to the fresh request.

Earlier the Commission had given approval to Director General Ranga Dissanayake to file necessary action against the minister and two others in the High Court over charges of misappropriation amounting to Rs 8 million.

Mr Jayakody had served as the head of the tender board that awarded a particular tender that came under scrutiny.
