A sudden hailstorm accompanied by strong winds caused extensive property damage in the Diwulapelassa area in Teldeniya on Friday (October 3), damaging around 30 houses and disrupting power and road access, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Diwulapelassa Police Station Police Inspector M D Deshapriya said several roads in the area were blocked after trees and branches were uprooted by the winds, while power lines were brought down, leading to electricity outages.
According to residents, the hailstorm and strong winds swept through the area for nearly two hours, bringing to an end the prolonged drought that had affected the region for several months.
Roofs of many houses were severely damaged, with asbestos sheets and tiles ripped off or blown away, Inspector Deshapriya said. Vehicular movement along the Diwulapelassa-Teldeniya road came to a standstill after fallen trees obstructed the route, he added.
In the Walasgala area, power supply was further affected after trees fell onto a 33,000-volt high-tension line.
DMC officials said that teams from the Road Development Authority (RDA) and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) were deployed to clear roads and restore power.
DMC officers, along with Grama Sevaka and Divisional Secretariat officials, were also conducting damage assessments in the affected areas.
Inspector Deshapriya confirmed that no injuries or casualties had been reported, though extensive damage to property was observed.
