MSI Students Champion Sustainable Tourism on World Tourism Day 2025
View(s):The Management & Science Institute (MSI), Colombo, marked World Tourism Day 2025 with a vibrant celebration themed “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” The event hd the role of sustainability in the tourism, hospitality, travel, and event management sectors while showcasing the creativity and leadership of MSI students.
MSI, the offshore campus of Management and Science University (MSU) Malaysia — a QS World-Ranked and UGC-recognised university — has been empowering Sri Lankan youth for over 15 years to assume leadership roles in a rapidly evolving global industry. This year’s World Tourism Day celebration brought together students, faculty members, industry experts, and invited schoolchildren from Colombo, featuring cultural performances, panel discussions, and academic dialogues on the future of sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka and beyond.
The panel discussion, moderated by MSI student Thenuja Kothalawala, drew insights from leading voices in the industry, including:
Prof. Dr Rangana Shalika (University of Sabaragamuwa) – Strategies for sustainable tourism and overcoming seasonality.
Mrs Paddy Paul (The Golden Isles) – Sri Lanka’s potential as South Asia’s MICE hub and post-pandemic shifts in MICE tourism.
Mr Nanadana Wirasinha (The Kingsbury Colombo) – The future of hospitality and redefining guest experiences.
Dr Sumith De Silva (Airport & Aviation Services Sri Lanka) – Regional collaboration, connectivity, and building resilient tourism.
Dr Sam Peiris, Director of MSI, underscored the significance of the global theme and outlined four key pillars for the industry’s future: empowering communities, supporting local businesses, promoting sustainable practices, and driving inclusive growth. He also highlighted tourism as a sector offering vast career opportunities for young people, particularly women, to become leaders in hospitality and event management.
MSI students played a central role in organising the cultural and academic segments of the day, reflecting their commitment to sustainability, creativity, and leadership.
Celebrating World Tourism Day at MSI goes beyond tradition — it reinforces the university’s dedication to shaping future-ready graduates equipped to build a sustainable and inclusive tourism industry.
