Step into a mesmerising world where tradition meets elegance, and culture is brought to life through the graceful rhythm of young performers.

Maathra 14 is more than just a cultural show — it is a living tribute to Sri Lanka’s rich artistic heritage, recreated with passion, precision, and purpose. Conceptualised by Dr. Mohan Lal Grero, Founder of Lyceum International School, and nurtured under the visionary leadership of Dr. (Mrs.) Kumari Grero, Coordinating Principal of Lyceum International Schools, Maathra has blossomed into Sri Lanka’s largest school-based Cultural Dance Festival.

Since its inception in 2008, Maathra has grown steadily in scale, impact, and artistry. What began as a simple school event has now evolved into a nationally celebrated stage where hundreds of young dancers from across the island proudly honour the timeless beauty of traditional Sri Lankan dance. With its deep roots in cultural preservation, Maathra offers a rare opportunity to celebrate age-old traditions through the eyes and expressions of the next generation.

Central to Maathra’s artistic excellence is the continuous guidance of Mr. Rasika Kothalawala, Senior Lecturer at the University of Visual and Performing Arts, who has served as the official consultant since the very first performance. His creative insight and dedication have shaped Maathra into a professional-calibre production, captivating audiences year after year.

Under the dynamic direction of Ms. Nisha Kothalawala, Head of Cultural Dance at Lyceum International Schools, this year’s Maathra 14 features more than 700 exceptionally talented young performers. These students will bring to life a collection of refined choreographies and vibrant stories through dance, showcasing the spirit, discipline, and emotion that characterise traditional Sri Lankan performance arts.

The dancers represent Lyceum branches from Nugegoda, Panadura, Wattala, Gampaha, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, and Kurunegala, reflecting the broad reach and shared values of the Lyceum network. Each branch brings its unique flavour to the event while upholding the shared commitment to cultural excellence and artistic growth.

The event is set to take place on 11th October 2025 at the iconic Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo. Two unforgettable performances will light up the stage: Show 1 at 4:02 PM and Show 2 at 6:58 PM.

Maathra 14 welcomes an enthusiastic audience of over 2,500 guests, including diplomatic officials, alumni, community leaders, cultural dignitaries, and families. It is more than an evening of dance; it is a gathering of hearts and minds to celebrate unity, heritage, and excellence through the performing arts.

Beyond the lights and applause, Maathra carries a deeper message — a powerful reminder that culture is not just preserved in museums or textbooks, but lives on in the movements, expressions, and voices of our children. It is a statement of identity, a symbol of pride, and an artistic bridge between generations.

Maathra 14 is a journey through Sri Lanka’s cultural essence — a performance that resonates far beyond the stage and deep into the hearts of all who experience it.
