Athurugiriya Mahamathya Vidyalaya students participate in Student Parliament

The Athurugiriya Mahamathya Vidyalaya Student Parliament session was held this week at the old Parliament Chamber of the Presidential Secretariat.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Speaker Rizvie Salih said the Parliament of Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful and unique parliaments in the world, and pointed out the importance of representing the public in the chamber by respecting traditions, adhering to the established rules in a disciplined manner.

Minister of Buddhasasana,
Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi said it is the responsibility of all parliamentarians to use civilized language, not agree to inappropriate bills, and to build a good society for future generations.

Director General – Legal of the Presidential Secretariat J M Wijebandara, said citizens should not be discriminated against.

Director (Legislative Services) and Acting Director (Communications) of Parliament M Jayalath Perera, spoke of the development of children’s leadership qualities and skills, noting that the Student Parliament is a great platform for this purpose. He briefed students on parliamentary legislative processes and functions.

Principal of Athurugiriya Mahamathya Vidyalaya, Gamini Jayaratne said the programme played an important role in developing students’ leadership skills.

During the session, the Speaker was appointed and took oaths, and members were also sworn in. After the Prime Minister and other ministers of the Student Parliament spoke, the Student Parliament was adjourned.

Certificates of participation were presented to the members of the Student Parliament.

The session was attended by Major Nadeeka Dangolla, Assistant Director of the Presidential Secretariat, the school’s teaching staff, parents and a group of guests.
