Pachyderms in musth get a ‘sanatorium’ at Pinnawala

For the first time in Sri Lanka, a concrete enclosure reinforced with thirty tons of wire has been constructed to care for elephants during their musth period at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.
Built at a cost of Rs 66 million rupees, this facility breaks away from the centuries-old practice of chaining elephants to trees during the musth period. The enclosure, spread across half an acre within the orphanage grounds, ensures that elephants remain free from chains while being protected within a carefully controlled environment.

An iron-beam gate forms the main entrance. Inside, the facility is equipped with features tailored to elephant care. There is a bathing pool, a drinking water tank, an elephant cubicle for rest, and designated zones for veterinary observation and medical treatment.
A viewing platform has also been built, allowing visitors and researchers to observe the animals without disturbance. Large observation windows enable veterinarians to monitor the elephants’ health closely while maintaining safety.
The initial phase of the project provides facilities for one elephant, though expansion plans are already in place to accommodate two in the future.
“This is the first time such a haven has been constructed in Sri Lanka, though similar facilities exist in other countries,” said Director General of the National Zoological Department Veterinarian Dr. Chandana Rajapaksha. “Our priority is the well-being of the elephants, which are a national treasure.”
The project follows extensive consultation with mahouts, veterinarians, engineers, and administrative officers to identify the most humane and practical way to manage elephants during this period.
Deputy Director of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Mihiran Medawala, noted that while the facility provides comprehensive care, it does not attempt to artificially introduce partners to elephants. “Each elephant has its own preferences. Forcing a match could lead to conflict and even fatalities. The facility is designed for comfort and observation, not intervention.”
