Diyawadana Nilame voters list yet to be finalised

The Buddhist Commissioner’s Department has not yet finalised the number of votes in the forthcoming elections to select a Diyawadana Nilame for the Sri Dalada Maligawa to be held on November 7 at the Senkadagala Buddhist Society Hall on Dharmapala Mawatha as in previous years, which could accommodate the voters.
Though the figure had been said to be 159 at the moment, it could vary due to any transfers of divisional secretaries during the period. The divisional secretaries form the ‘core’ voters; It was earlier the ‘raté mahathmaya, and then the divisional revenue officer, and now the divisional secretary. The divisional secretary cadre has women officers and they are not eligible to vote according to the Buddhist Temporalities Act of 1931.
Therefore the Buddhist Commissioner’s Department has not finalised the list of voters, though it is assumed there may be 159 for the voting on November 7, said the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Kandy Secretariat which would handle the voting presided by the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs.
