Bribery Commission records over 3,900 complaints in seven months

Bribery Commission receives whopping 3937 complaints this year compared to last year’s 240.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) received 3937 complaints during the first seven months of this year compared to a total of 240 complaints recorded last year.

From a school principal to broker, at least 49 people were arrested during 72 raids carried out by the Commission until July 31, according to the progress report by CIABOC.

Among the total 3,937 complaints the Commission received, 288 of them were directed for further investigations and it was decided not to pursue 1011 complaints due to insufficient facts or for not falling under the Act.

At least 489 complaints were directed to other institutions since they did not fall under the Act and 619 were referred for further reports and other additional matters. In addition 275 complaints were forwarded to the Investigation Branch to record statements.

The progress report detailing the Commission’s activities from January 1 until July 31 released the details of arrested individuals as well.

On the prosecution front, the Commission filed 31 bribery related cases and 15 corruption linked cases in the High Court, while eight were registered over accumulation of unexplained wealth.

During the first seven months of the year, the Commission successfully concluded 41 bribery and corruption related cases in both the Magistrate and High courts in addition one at Trial at bar.

As a result of legal action initiated by the Commission, High Courts have imposed fines totalling up to Rs 1.34 million, and the Magistrate Courts amounting to Rs 585,000.

At least 272 cases – most of them at High Courts (249), followed by 22 at Magistrate Courts and one at Trial at bar, are still pending, according to the report.
