The Basnayake Nilame of the historic Dodanwela Natha Devale, Akalanka Bandara Werapitiya, called for the silver replica of the original golden crown that King Rajasinghe II gifted to the devale, to be enshrined within the devale again.
The original golden crown, gifted by the monarch after his victory at the historic battle of Gannoruwa, was kept in the devale before it was taken by officials of the Archaeological Department to the Kandy Museum, from where it was stolen. A silver replica was then made to be kept in the museum.
The Basnayake Nilame said that prior to being taken to the museum, the kapu mahatmayas of the devale had taken good care of the golden crown for more than three centuries. He called for at least the silver replica to be now restored to where it rightfully belongs so the people of Yatinuwara and other devotees can see at least the likeness of the offering the Kandyan king made to god Natha.
