Thousands of persons who surrendered their previous documents for their lands in order to receive title deeds keeping with a plan announced during the former government have been left without any official deeds now.

Their official documents including Swarnaboomi and Jaya boomi titles were collected by the respective Grama Sevaka and Divisional Secretary offices assuring that a title deed will be issued.

The former government issued title deeds under the Urumaya programme.

The programme to issue title deeds was announced by the former government under former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in a programme titled ‘Urumaya’.

Under the programme, the owners of the land were to be given a free hold deed where they would be able to mortgage, sell or transfer the lands.

However, under the Anura Kumara Dissanayake government the programme was suspended.

Persons who were in possession of documents showing their entitlement to the lands have been left without any documentation.

The affected persons have appealed to the government to take steps to issue them with the deeds or proper documentation.
