More than 730 locations on main roads across the country have been identified as dangerous for motorists and prone to accidents, according to a study conducted by the Police Traffic Division with assistance from police stations across the country.
Traffic Police Chief Senior Superintendent Manoj Ranagala told the Sunday Times they had already alerted the Road Development Authority (RDA) to take remedial action on the 732 hazardous spots, while the respective police stations have been directed to inform the Traffic Police Headquarters about the progress of such action.
The move is one of the measures taken to reduce road accidents, SSP Ranagala said.
Other measures include enhanced night operations to check on long-distance buses.
Police stations have also been instructed to share the number of traffic offences reported in their areas with the Traffic Police Headquarters on a daily basis.
SSP Ranagala said that driver fatigue and reckless driving were two of the main causes of the accidents.
He said that under the traffic regulations, after a four-and-a-half-long trip, the driver is required to take a half-an-hour break, but in most cases, drivers stop over for just 10 minutes and proceed.
He said that on long-distance buses, ideally, the driver should be replaced midway, but he should not be travelling in the same bus. Instead, he should be ready for duty at the point of change.
He noted that this year, from January up to last Tuesday, there were 1,205 fatal accidents reported, claiming the lives of 1,276 persons.
In the corresponding period last year, there were 1,099 fatal accidents, resulting in the deaths of 1,148 people.
