Growing up with a dog is one of life’s greatest blessings, dog lovers would say. These four-legged creatures bring unwavering love, happiness, and priceless memories to countless lives.

Illustrating the profound bond between a dog and humans, a heartwarming story emerges from the University of the Visual and Performing Arts. “Kalu” was a gentle and affectionate dog, and his story demonstrates love, loyalty, and the incredible impact a dog can have on an entire community.

A fond farewell: The final rites for Kalu

Kalu had found his forever home at the university, where students, academics and the staff embraced him as one of their own. They were lost for words when Kalu died last week.

To Janith Premathilaka, a fourth-year student, Kalu had been an unwavering companion. Just a puppy when Janith entered the university, Kalu became everyone’s pet—wandering through lecture halls and across the campus grounds, never once disturbing a class.

Anjalee Sandamali, a fellow student, said Kalu was so used to the sounds of drums and percussion that he was never scared. Instead, he would listen to the rhythms. He never went hungry, for he had many carers to feed him until his demise. He was as well-fed as he was well-grown and might have appeared to be ferocious, yet students petted him. What’s more, he was the guard dog of many female students when they walked to their boarding at night after campus activity.

When Kalu fell ill and his health deteriorated, students and the lecturers did their best to get him cured. However, leaving leaving many in tears, he bid farewell last week.

Word of Kalu’s demise spread quickly throughout the university. Many paid their last respects to Kalu and even arranged an almsgiving event, wishing him a rebirth as a human with good qualities. The university was lined with many who had come to say their goodbyes.
