School programmes to mark National Environment Week
View(s):To mark National Environment Week on the theme ‘Plastic Waste Management Day’, the Environment Ministry organised awareness programmes, environmental cleaning programmes, and tree planting programmes in every school in the Sabaragamuwa Province in collaboration with the Education Ministry.
This is in accordance with the circular on National Environment Week.
In addition to the school programmes, a national programme planned by the Central Environmental Authority was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media Hansaka Wijemuni and Ministry of Environment Secretary R Uduwawala.
A national programme on the National Plastic Waste Management Action Plan is being held with the participation of all stakeholders.
In addition to the main programme, other institutions affiliated with the Environment Ministry have also planned to conduct programmes in several areas of the island tomorrow.
These include conducting mobile awareness programmes by distributing pamphlets targeting densely populated commercial towns in the 25 districts across the island regarding food wrappers and single-use plastics, which are a raw material of polythene banned under the National Environmental Act
