From the UK to Sri Lanka, ‘Sir Michael Wilshaw Commends Lyceum’s Journey’

View(s):

On the 32nd anniversary of the Lyceum group, it’s so good to hear that the Teacher Training Centre is also celebrating its 21st birthday at the new Lyceum University Campus which I visited again just a few weeks ago.

I know teacher training is invested with the same energy and dedication as everything else in this prestigious school and college group in Sri Lanka.

The Centre serves to remind everyone that good teachers and good teaching lie at the heart of a school’s success and that of our children and young people.

- Sir Michael Wilshaw Chief Academic Adviser to the Lyceum Group and former His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools in the UK.

Strong professional development and training of teaching staff along with the dissemination of good practice across the curriculum are key priorities for the Lyceum Group and this Teacher Training Centre will help to recruit and retain great teachers in the constituent schools.

We all remember those teachers that inspired us and helped to shape our lives. Indeed, I became a teacher because of one man, Cecil Pocock, a history teacher at my secondary school in London.

He had fought in the Second World War as a tank commander and been badly wounded. His battle scars showed on his face and Cecil presented a fierce image as he strode into the classroom to teach us. One word from Cecil and a noisy group of youngsters would fall silent and wait for the excitement to begin.

And what excitement! History would come alive! Whether it was the Kings and Queens of England or the Battle of Hastings or his own experiences of fighting on the beaches of Normandy, Cecil brought colour and drama to his teaching because he knew all too well that to keep our attention he had to fire our interest and imagination. He did this by being an actor as well as a teacher!!

I will never forget Cecil Pocock as you will not forget the teachers who inspired you and shaped your lives.

Whilst at the Campus, I was lucky enough to be able to teach Economics to a group of Foundation Students. Hopefully, I used some of Cecil’s techniques as well as those I learned in my fifty years of teaching to explain the complexities of Globalism and its potential destruction by the forces of Protectionism and the vagaries of Donald Trump!! I do hope they will remember the lesson as they embark on their undergraduate careers.

My congratulations to the Lyceum Group once again. It continues to grow and prosper with a brand-new school being developed near the airport.

Like all the schools in the network I saw nothing but enthusiasm and dedication when I visited shortly before my return to the UK. The newly-appointed and charming Principal showed me around the school in its early stages and carefully explained the plans for growth and development. I have no doubt that it will be an enormous success and I look forward to seeing it again when I return next year.

Happy Birthday to Lyceum and to all those connected to this wonderful network of schools in beautiful Sri Lanka.
