Religious advisory councils to be established

The Education Ministry is to appoint advisory councils representing all major religions in the island.

Accordingly, advisory councils will have Buddhist, Catholic, Christian, Hindu and Islam religious representatives.

The councils will be operational for a three-year period and would be consulted in syllabus preparation. provide advice on religious educational affairs.

The Buddhist advisory council will have 26 members from the Buddhist clergy and 20 lay persons. The Ministry Secretary, Commissioner General of Examinations, and officials will be members.

The Catholic councils will have representatives from the Bishops Conference and will comprise 20 members, while the Hindu council will have the head of the Sri Lanka Ramakrishna mission and kurukkals.

The councils will operate under the supervision of Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
