The NSBM Green University Faculty of Engineering proudly hosted FUSION 2025, the Inter- School Engineering Challenge, with the Grand Finale held on the 26th of May. The event was jointly organised by the Association of Engineering, the Renewable Energy Society, and the Robotics and Automation Society. It served as a platform to showcase creativity, competitive spirit, and technological innovation of young minds.

FUSION 2025 featured two major competitions: TracerX, a Line-Tracing Robot Competition, and jd.air a Debate Competition centred on themes of renewable energy.

The debate brought together ten schools from around the country, showcasing their enthusiasm and energy. The first round, held on May 9th, examined whether the use of resources in renewable energy development is favourable or unfavourable for life on Earth. In the second round, debaters discussed whether renewable energy would lead to a shift in global power structures. The semi-final focused on whether Sri Lanka should adopt nuclear power over coal and gas for electricity generation. The Grand Finale, held on May 20th, featured an engaging debate between Royal College, Colombo 07 and Mahinda Rajapaksa College, Homagama on the topic: Should Sri Lanka prioritise solar energy over other renewables to achieve energy independence? After a powerful discussion on the future of green energy, Royal College emerged victorious, securing the jd.air 2025 title.

TracerX, held on May 21st, was a one-day robotics competition organised by the Robotics and Automation Society. It aimed to spark interest in robotics among school students while offering a hands-on introduction to university undergraduates. Teams were challenged to build and programme line-following robots to navigate a custom-built modular track. Richmond College, Galle claimed first place, followed by Ranabima Royal College, Kandy and Musaeus College, Colombo. More than just a competition, TracerX provided mentorship and technical support throughout the preparation phase, transforming the experience into a valuable learning opportunity.

The long-awaited finale of FUSION 2025, held on May 26th, was a three-part celebration. It featured an award ceremony for the winners of jd.air and TracerX, the debut live performance by the official band of the Faculty of Engineering, FREQUENCY, and the first reveal of GREEN RUSH – the first video game developed by students of the NSBM Faculty of Engineering. The game captivated the audience through an interactive session in the Gaming Arena of FUSION EXPO, marking NSBM’s entry into the game development space. A highlight of the closing ceremony was the FUSION EXPO 2025, where students’ innovative projects were showcased.

The Physics Odyssey segment displayed creative projects by Engineering Foundation students, while undergraduates presented a wide array of solutions to real-world challenges, demonstrating the depth and potential of NSBM’s engineering talent.

Dr. Narendra De Silva, General Manager of Electricity Company (Pvt) Ltd., attended the event as Chief Guest, while Eng. Naleen Jayasuriya, General Manager of Programme Management at Sri Lanka Telecom PLC, graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.

The event was dignified by the presence of Prof. Chaminda Rathnayake, Deputy Vice Chancellor of NSBM; Prof. Baratha Dodankotuwa, Head of Academic Development and Quality Assurance; and Dr. Chandana Perera, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Also in attendance were members of the academic and administrative staff, industry partners, and students of the faculty.

FUSION 2025 was made possible through the generous support of its sponsors: Jayakody Cost Consultants (Pvt) Ltd. (Platinum Sponsor), Micro Tech, and Pramuditha Asintha Photography (Official Photography Partner).

As FUSION 2025 concludes, the NSBM Faculty of Engineering warmly invites all aspiring innovators to join after their A/L examinations and become part of the future of engineering and technology in Sri Lanka. – Binul Athukorala
