Provincial primary and secondary schools to be developed
View(s):The Education Ministry has commenced a programme to rehabilitate around 4,500-5,000 provincial primary and secondary schools to encourage students to enroll in a schoolroom that is no more than three kilometers from their homes.
Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said the programme has now commenced, and will continue next year as well to reduce the rush to get students into national or ‘popular’ schools in each province.
Schools to be developed under these programmes will be selected after a student census is done in each area, he said. “First we will see the student population of each area and then develop the schools accordingly, so that it will not only be a benefit to the students but also to parents,” he said.
The selected schools will be upgraded so that science, mathematics and all other students can be taught up to Grade 10 in these schools after which the students can move to national schools.
“At present there is a race to get students into national schools, but this won’t be necessary once the provincial schools are developed to a high standard with all facilities including better classrooms, libraries, sanitary facilities etc. This will make schools more attractive to the students and the parents,” he said.
Excess teachers in national schools will be transferred to provincial schools in the relevant areas so that teacher shortages too can be managed, he added. (DWI)
