For many, earning a PhD is an already extraordinary personal achievement, but for Dr Chamodini Nisansala Thilakarathna and Dr Malinda Prabhath Madhusankha Garusinghe Devage, the milestone was made even more special as it represented a shared dream fulfilled together. Originally from Sri Lanka, Chamodini and Malinda embarked on their PhD journey in the field of Food Science and Technology when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. After meeting ten years ago while pursuing their undergraduate studies at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, their passion for food science and mutual ambition drove them to excel academically, each graduating with first-class honours.

Their pursuit of doctoral degrees was fuelled by Monash University’s high global ranking and the advanced research facilities at the Malaysian campus. They also found tremendous encouragement from their supervisors, Dr Thoo Yin Yin, Dr Lee, and Associate Professor Siow Lee Fong.

Their PhD experience was far from ordinary. Shortly after beginning their research, the global pandemic disrupted their plans. “Suddenly mobility control measures came, and we got stuck in our apartment for a long period after that,” Chamodini recalled. Despite early setbacks, including both contracting COVID-19 and temporarily halting their lab work, the pair remained determined. They channelled these difficulties into opportunities, publishing review articles that strengthened their research proposals and ultimately enhanced their PhD outcomes.

Throughout their journey, Chamodini and Malinda constantly supported each other. “Your life partner becoming your research partner is a blessing,” said Malinda. Working in the same laboratory allowed them to share ideas, and review each other’s manuscripts. Their teamwork extended beyond research, as each willingly took on household responsibilities when the other faced important milestones.

Their research carries significant implications for the food industry. Chamodini’s project focused on modifying an underutilised seed oil as a sustainable alternative to cocoa butter in dark chocolate, making premium chocolate healthier, more affordable, and environmentally friendly. Malinda, meanwhile, developed a unique spice blend from five different spices, encapsulated to maintain freshness, enhance flavour, and improve solubility, suitable for diverse culinary uses.

Their outstanding academic achievements have earned recognition, including publications in top-tier journals, international awards, and travel grants. These awards, including a Gold Medal at the ITEX international exhibition and Best Oral Presenter at the AAOCS conference in Australia, not only elevated their research profile but shaped their future career aspirations. They were also nominated at the prestigious Norris Family Award for Outstanding Research Publication.

Graduating together is truly a milestone for the couple. “It represents not just our academic journey but also our shared dedication, perseverance, and unwavering support for each other,” Chamodini said. Professionally, this marks the start of a promising new chapter. Both aim to secure postdoctoral positions abroad to further enhance their research expertise, eventually returning to Sri Lanka to contribute meaningfully to its academic landscape.

Outside academia, Chamodini and Malinda share a passion for travelling, using breaks from research to explore Malaysia and neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia. They also enjoy hiking, swimming, and discovering new cultures, cuisines, and watching movies, often alongside friends.

Their family’s unwavering support has also played a critical role. Despite geographical distance, regular communication and encouragement from their parents and siblings have kept them motivated. “Our graduation isn’t just our success, it is a proud moment for our entire family,” Chamodini shared.

Offering advice to future postgraduate students, especially couples pursuing education together, they had this to say, “Studying alongside your partner allows you to support each other and maximise available opportunities, making the journey smoother and more fulfilling.”
