SANDWICHED in Between a Dead Body and an Unwritten Deed

One fine day, whilst I was all by myself, I realised that my bag of life was empty. All I had cultivated in the past was weed and barren trees. I was so alarmed of the future, as there was nothing at all that I had gathered for the world to value me. I was a vain product that no one wanted to buy. The worries of yesterday were hijacking my present moment. To add more to it, the fear of the future, threw me out of my life track disabling me from living in the present moment.

Both the worries of yesterday and the fear of the future have robbed my present moment, the moment that I have to cultivate in my garden of life. On one hand the regrets of my life were making me inferior, on the other hand my fears were making me anxious. Inferiority and anxiety are joy killing parasites. Life amidst two venomous snakes pushed me to attempt escaping the reality of my life on three occasions. This is exactly what many of us in the society are doing today. They either contemplate on the regrets of yesterday or live a life full of fears about the future. Both these thought patterns are able to freeze you in the present. Yesterday has already become a dead body and tomorrow is an unwritten deed. Both situations do not exist in the present. You cannot give life to a dead body nor can you have any assurance of an unwritten deed. Yet, you have the possibility to erase the history and rewrite your future if you live in the present to the fullest.

The growth begins in the present. Both history and the future are lifeless situations. Life exists in the current moment. Some people are so busy making money that they ignore the precious moments they ought to spend with their spouse and children. By the time they have accumulated enough money, both their spouse and children will be at different life stages. They would have missed the beauty of life during those precious life stages.

It is pointless to give infant food to an adult, similarly it is not suitable to feed solids to a newborn. Every stage in life has a different requirement. If your wife requests to go for a movie together with you when she is young, it is futile to act upon it when she is in her sixties. Likewise, when your little kids request you to take them to the Merry Go Round with you, it will be worthless to take them to a Merry Go Round after they become mums with kids. Many are extremely busy focusing on either yesterday, which is a dead body or in the future which is not written yet.

It is indeed a sad sight to see many living as though they are immortal, not knowing that there is no assurance of waking up tomorrow morning. My policy is to live life as though today is my last day on earth. I make sure to live the moment to its fullest. Happiness is a decision. You could be happily enjoying two dosa and feeling content whereas you could even be miserable before an international buffet at a five star hotel, based on the definition that you have about happiness. Your thoughts could either renew your strength or weaken you to the depth.

Regrets of yesterday and the fears of tomorrow will only present you with a dwarf thinking style because worry and fear are relatives of inferiority. Inferiority and self-confidence have been enemies since the inception of mankind and it will never walk together in harmony. Thinking about the crop you already lost yesterday, will only prevent you from planting in the present. Once you have foregone planting in the present, you will not harvest any crop in the future. Therefore, thinking about a dead body and an unwritten deed will only make you a farmer with less crop. Life is meant for growing and harvesting, not sleeping and being futile.

It is immensely saddening to witness many Sri Lankans talking about what is taking place in the country for the past seventy years and where we would be in the next fifteen years, not knowing that we all have the potential to rewrite our future if we keenly work hard at this moment of time. As many of us are already aware, I started my life with just a tattered twenty rupee note in my ragged blue jeans. I did not even possess a belt. My trousers were held up together with just a coir string.

At the time when my Josephian friends were driving lavish cars, I was walking the streets of Quarry Road as a mental patient. I begged in three junctions out of which the former William Grinding Mills was one. There was once a day that I almost proposed to a prostitute to marry me as I believed that she was the only one I am worth to have. There were a countless number of regrets and immeasurable fears that came over me with the intention of robbing my present from me.

Yet, I was so determined to live in the moment and do what I have to do in the very moment. Instead of worrying about not completing my studies, there were days I studied for over twelve hours a day. The moment I won the Best Sri Lankan award from CIM – UK, I realised how important living in the present is. Similarly, while I was working for Nature’s Secrets there were a countless number of days that I had worked till late night instead of being anxious about my future.

The moment I was promoted to head the brand “Nature’s Secret” for Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the South Asian region, I realised how important it was to live to the maximum possibility in the present moment. Many miss the beauty of a film merely because they place their eyes on the screen, yet they place their mind in the history or in the future. Therefore, do not get sandwiched in between the worries of yesterday and the fears of the future.
