The Education Ministry aims to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject in the school curriculum in 2024, with prominence on robotics, computer vision, machine learning, data mining, and other related technologies.

National Institute of Education (NIE) Director General Dr Sunil Jayantha Nawarathna told the Sunday Times that each school should incorporate such subjects into its curriculum from Grade 6 to Grade 13 along the lines of school capacity, teaching aids, plus, performance of each student.

“We are at the beginning of a revolution that is structurally changing the way we live, work and relate to one another. In its magnitude, scope and complexity, the fourth industrial revolution has a diverse effect on anything humankind has run into before,” Dr Nawarathna said.

Schemes are also lined up for effective training sessions to encourage students to make use of tools, like ChatGPT, to strengthen their knowledge concerning alternative subjects.

“AI will promote competency in development of students enabling them to accomplish educational priorities in better ways. AI further facilitates greater access to educational resources, especially in under-resourced areas. Students will experience a wide range of subjects: the sky is the limit,” added Dr Nawarathna.

Related teacher learning modules have already been designed, and as a pilot project, 20 schools have been selected. The programme will begin at the end of June.

Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha recently said the decision to introduce AI to the school curriculum was made with a view to elevate the nation’s education standard in keeping with global standards.

“Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be taught using AI-driven automation from next year,” added the minister, throwing light to how AI can play a part in the improvement of Sri Lanka’s education system.
