As Gateway College completes 25 years, a student of the very first class of alumni has stepped forward to fund the education of two students who will follow the Advanced Level programme of study at the institution. The scholarships celebrate and honour two of the school’s first class of alumni—Indisa Kahandaliyanage and Sisuru Viduruwan. Both Indisa and Sisuru who were part of the inaugural batch of prefects left us in an untimely manner, but not without making their mark on the school and on all the lives that they touched. After his A’levels, Indisa went on to follow a course of undergraduate studies in India, while Sisuru chose a path in engineering in Australia. During their time at Gateway College, Indisa and Sisuru led the school in several ways, including the establishment of the Science and Badminton Clubs, and by contributing to the creation of the school song.

The scholarships in celebration of Indisa and Sisuru will be awarded to two students following the Advanced Level programme of study at Gateway College Colombo. One scholarship will be to a student who is already studying at Gateway College and the other to a student who wishes to join the instituion to pursue Advanced Level studies. These scholarships are for students who wish to take up any of the following programmes offered at Gateway and preference will be given to students pursuing careers in the field of science and engineering:

4 A Levels

3 A Levels and a Diploma

2 A Levels and the Foundation Diploma in Sport

SACE Stage 2

The scholarships are made possible by a student of the very first batch of the school who wishes to remain anonymous. Recalling their experiences during academic sessions within the classroom and the informal learning that took place outside the classroom through co-curriculars, projects and school activities, this member of the alumni expresses immense gratitude for the immeasurable effect such all-round exposure has had on the entire batch of students. Accordingly, the scholarships are offered to two students who are committed to both academic and co-curricular activities.

Recalling their days at Gateway College, the donor of the two scholarships says, ‘it was immediately after I joined school that we actively engaged as a student body to design our school uniform, create a school song, and host our first sports meet and the prefects’ day. At the time the school was relatively small, enabling a family like atmosphere and building friendships that would withstand the tests of both time and space. Now looking back on my time at Gateway College, I realize what a privilege and honour it was to be part of that incredible moment. Our Founder, Mr. Alles left an indelible mark on the lives of all those he came into contact with, and it is with a heart full of gratitude that I recall my own experience.  Little did I realise at the time that the foundation that I was receiving at the hands of Gateway College and the Alles Family, would become the bedrock upon which the rest of my life would be shaped’. This past pupil also says, ‘during a recent visit to Gateway College Colombo, I witnessed with awe and pride the school’s growth and success at the hands of its second generation of leaders—Dr. Harsha Alles and Mrs. Dinali Alles. Under their leadership, Gateway College has achieved the incredible heights that our founders Mr. R.I.T Alles and Mrs. Rohini Alles dreamed of for the school, while maintaining the culture and spirit of Gateway.

Commenting on the noble offer made by this past student, Dr. Harsha Alles, the Chairman of Gateway says that this voluntary gesture of naming the two scholarships in memory of two colleagues while wanting to remain anonymous speaks for the rich values of this pioneer student and for their dream to see all students of Gateway embrace such values to make Sri Lanka a better place.

Students who have either done International GCSE/GCSE, Sri Lankan O Levels or SACE 1 are eligible to apply. All applications should be emailed to gis@gatewayworldwide.com before the 19th of June 2023. Application should include the CV of the student and a write-up in no more than 200 words explaining why the applicant should be considered for this scholarship.
