The Education Ministry is planning to recruit 6,000 graduate teachers for GCE (A/L) classes in a bid to meet the shortage of teachers.

The move comes as the recruitment of some 26,000 teachers has been held up in view of a pending court case.

Accordingly the 6,000 teachers will be recruited by next month to ensure that A/L classes could be conducted uninterrupted.

The new recruits will teach A/L maths, science, commerce, geography and foreign languages.

Earlier the Government planned to recruit 26,000 teachers from those who are already employed in the public sector in different fields so that the Government does not have to raise funds for their payments additionally as they are already public sector employees.

Initially, the Government planned to recruit those under the age of 35 years, but later extended it to 40. But a group between the ages of 40-45 filed action in courts. Another group of unemployed graduates too filed a case. The Court cases are pending.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that while the case is pending they had decided to launch another recruitment programme so that A/L classes can continue without interruption. He said due to the existing vacancies some 1,500 schools, most of them in remote areas, are finding it difficult to maintain A/L classes. Mainly science and maths streams have been affected.

The minister said students were dropping out from A/L classes due to a lack of teachers.

He said the Finance Ministry approved the recruitment of
6,000 teachers .

Meanwhile, 7,800 teachers will be recruited from those passing out with Diplomas from the National Colleges of Education for all classes.

He said despite these two recruitment programmes they would require the 26,000 teachers as well to meet the shortages. Some 12,000 teachers, most of them teaching in A/L classes, retired in December last year in keeping with the new retirement policy. -DWI
