The commemoration was organised by the Ranaviru Seva Authority.
President Wickremesinghe, together with invitees including relatives of the service members, paid floral tributes to 28,619 members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the war.

A day earlier (May 18), citizens in the North and East remembered civilians who were killed during the war. A large number of commemorative events were organised in the north to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the end of the war. The main remembrance event was held at Mullivaikkal in Mullativu in the presence of a large gathering of civilians, including many families who had lost loved ones during the war.
