Kimbulapitiya village is 27km from Colombo.

The village has been famous for decades for manufacturing fireworks, or crackers.

There are some big cracker manufacturing companies in this village, and every single house in the area makes crackers for a living. In these houses the whole family gets together in making the domestic business a success. They face many hardships due to the increase of prices of products and the low interest people have towards fireworks nowadays.

Most of the workers in the big companies are Tamils from the Hill Country.

They carry out large scale productions mostly during the Christmas and New Year period to be delivered all around the country.

They produce Catherine wheel crackers, ahas kuuru, batto (thun mulas), nila kuru and many more small size novelty crackers and mal vedi of different varieties for the seasons.

Most of the domestic production are for the festival season.

During other times they produce crackers for elephant controlling, for chena cultivators, and large scale fireworks (mal vedi) used for various celebrations and events.
