Agri tourism blooms in Sigiriya village

The new addition to Sri Lanka’s accelerated tourism drive is agriculture tourism.

Tourists are now can see, feel and taste Sri Lankan agriculture under the theme “Agri Tours and Safari”. The pilot project, launched in collaboration with the Central Province Tourism Ministry, is being tried out in Sigiriya. It includes one or two-day-long tours during which tourists can explore the traditional agricultural aspects of Sri Lanka.

A village situated two kilometres away from Sigiriya town has been chosen as the site for the agri tourism activity. To reach the site, tourists can take a bus, three-wheeler, or even a bullock cart. On Thursday, several tourists were taken to the village to show them how vegetables and plants were being cultivated by using organic fertiliser, how villagers pound millet, and obtain rice from paddy using traditional methods.

They played in muddy water and received foot therapy from a school of fish as part of the traditional activities lined up for them.

The organisers say they are ready to provide many such experiences to more tourists, both foreign and local.
