Former Speaker Joseph Michael’s funeral today

The funeral of former Speaker of Parliament Joseph Michael Perera takes place this evening (Sunday) at the Ekala Cemetery.

Cortege leaves residence at Gama Meda Road, Tudella at 3 pm and will be at the Roman Catholic Church at Tudella before being taken for burial.

Born on September 15, 1941, Joseph Michael Perera was the 17th Speaker of Parliament (December 19, 2001 to February 7, 2004).

He joined active politics as an elected member of the Ja-Ela Urban Council in 1964-1967. Later he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Ja-Ela Urban Council. From 1971-1976, he served as the Chief Organiser for the Opposition.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament to the First National State Assembly (1976-1977) and served as an elected Member of Parliament to the Second National State Assembly (1977-1978). He was also an elected member of the first Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (1978-1988).

Mr Perera held a number of ministerial positions including Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Labour, and Minister of Fisheries from 1989 to 2015.
