Duende 23’ – the arena for the academic and aesthetic pursuits of SLIIT Academy students

The English language day, ‘Duende 23’ organised by the students of SLIIT Academy took place on 28th February 2023 at S.D.S Jayasinghe Auditorium, Dehiwala with the participation of more than 500 participants including lecturers, students, and distinguished guests. The event was graced by the presence of Professor Lakshman Ratnayake, Chairman of SLIIT Academy, and Professor Mahesha Kapurubandara , Pro Vice-chancellor International at SLIIT International.

“Duende 23” was conducted not only to provide entertainment but also to set an example by reviving this long-lost tradition of SLIIT Academy after the global pandemic.   The event was aimed at developing the language skills of students while providing an entertaining experience to the audience, developing leadership qualities of the students involved in the planning as well as enhancing the harmony, friendship, and fellowship among the students in SLIIT Academy.

The English language is taught as a second language in SLIIT Academy as a compulsory module for all the degree programmes they offer, and the modules are designed to support the students with their language competencies which are required for their future careers.  “Duende 23” consisted of several competitions including debates, oratory competitions, creative writing, spelling bee competitions, and a short movie competition in order to create healthy competition among students. Furthermore, the entertainment items including music, dancing, and drama provided a platform for students to develop their aesthetic and artistic pursuits along with academic activities.

Speaking at the event Professor Mahesha Kapurubandara highlighted the importance of participating in extracurricular activities during university life and the significance of keeping a healthy balance between academic life and social life. She further elaborated on the need for soft skills once the graduates enter the job market.

Professor Lakshman Ratnayake, Chairman of SLIIT Academy addressing the gathering stated that “People look for many attributes rather than theoretical knowledge. If you have English and IT skills up to the international level, your market is the international market”.  Further elaborating on the global opportunities and cultural exposure, one may achieve with linguistic power, Professor Ratnayake also stated “The most important aspects in today’s labor market is communication skills in English and soft skills”.

SLIIT Academy is enrolling students for their July 2023 intake for Foundation and Undergraduate Degree programmes in Information Technology, Business Management, Engineering & Health Sciences. Students are with pending A/L results could apply for the above programmes.
