Commemoration of Prof. J N O Fernando
View(s):The Commemoration of the 79th Birth Anniversary and the 8th Death Anniversary of late Professor Jerence Nansel Oleap Fernando was held on the 1st week of March 2023 at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), Rajagiriya. Prof J N O Fernando spent four decades in the Institute of Chemistry in Ceylon, holding a variety of positions including the Presidency. He was the first Dean and Rector of the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS). Last week, the Institute of Chemistry and the CCS commemorated this remarkable personality with a variety of activities.
These activities included the Prof. J.N.O Fernando Memorial Chemistry Knowledge Quiz, Religious Observations, Prof. J.N.O Fernando Commemoration Oration, and the donation of gift packs to the non-academic staff of CCS. The Prof. J.N.O Fernando Commemoration Oration was held on the 5th of March 2023 at the PPGL Siriwardane Auditorium at Adamantane House Rajagiriya. The Oration was delivered by an eminent industry chemist and a past student of the late Professor J.N.O Fernando, Dr. Piyal Ariyananda Head – Global Innovations, Stretchline Holdings Ltd under the title of “Down the memory lane with Prof. JNO and his vision on industry and Academia”.
The proceedings of the event commenced following the welcome speech delivered by Mr. N M S Hettigedara President of, the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. The citation of the orator was then read by Dr. Gobika Thiripuranathar, Head of the Department of Chemistry at CCS. Upon the oration certificates and cash prices were provided for the participants of the Prof. J.N.O Fernando Memorial Chemistry Knowledge Quiz that was held on the 2nd of March 2023. Similar to the previous year, the Level 4 team triumphed, while the Level 3 team finished as the first Runners-up. Additionally, gift bags containing vital things, stationery, and toys were handed to CCS non-academic personnel as well as to help their school-aged children. These donations were made possible by the generous contributions of CCS Alumni.
In conjunction with the commemoration, the Student Association of CCS planned a number of religious observances. These observations took place on March 3, 2023. Ms. Manurupa Fernando, members of the late Prof. J N O Fernando’s family, members of the Institute of Chemistry, Alumni, and CCS students were among those who attended this series of events.
