The Colombo SIGCHI Community is a local group in Sri Lanka that is making a name for itself in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). They recently participated in the prestigious CHI (Computer-Human Interaction) conference, showcasing their commitment to advancing HCI research and development in Sri Lanka. HCI is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on designing, evaluating, and implementing interactive computing systems that enhance the user experience. The field is gaining increasing importance as technology continues to shape our daily lives. HCI professionals work to ensure that computing systems are user-friendly, safe, ethical, and inclusive. The CHI conference is the premier international conference for HCI research, bringing together professionals and researchers from all over the world.

Sri Lankan Researchers Push the Limits of Child-Centered AI at CHI 2023

This year, Colombo SIGCHI Community has the privilege of being represented by two of its members, Mr. Chameera De Silva and Dr. Thilina Halloluwa, from the University of Colombo, USE HCI Lab. They will be presenting a research paper on Child Centred AI, which is a topic of great importance in the current context. The research paper focuses on developing an AI system that is tailored to the needs and preferences of children, which is vital because children are a vulnerable group that requires special attention when designing AI systems. The paper explores how children can be involved in the design and evaluation of AI systems and highlights the importance of ethical considerations when designing AI systems for children.

Colombo SIGCHI Community’s participation in the CHI conference is a significant achievement for Sri Lanka’s HCI community. It showcases the country’s growing interest and capability in the field and provides an opportunity for Sri Lankan researchers and practitioners to collaborate with their international counterparts. The Colombo SIGCHI Community is a non-profit organization established in 2020 to promote HCI research, education, and practice in Sri Lanka. The group organizes workshops, seminars, and networking events to bring together researchers, practitioners, and students interested in HCI. Their efforts are paying off as Sri Lanka’s HCI community is gaining recognition both locally and internationally. The group’s members have been invited to speak at various events, and their research has been published in prestigious journals and conferences. The group’s success is not only attributed to their dedication but also to the support they have received from academia, industry, and the government. The University of Colombo’s , School of Computing USE HCI Lab has been a significant contributor to the group’s activities, providing resources and guidance. The Sri Lankan government has also taken steps to promote the development of the country’s IT industry, including the establishment of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Colombo Innovation Tower. These initiatives have created a conducive environment for organizations like Colombo SIGCHI Community to thrive.

Colombo SIGCHI Community’s participation in the CHI conference is a significant achievement for Sri Lanka’s HCI community and a testament to the group’s dedication and hard work. Their success would not have been possible without the support of academia, industry, and the government, which have recognised the importance of HCI and its potential to drive innovation and economic growth.

Moving forward, it is important for Colombo SIGCHI Community to continue their efforts in promoting HCI research, education, and practice in Sri Lanka. They should also strive to collaborate with other HCI communities in the region and globally to exchange ideas, share best practices, and foster innovation. In order to achieve this, we are looking for industry partnerships and sponsorships for participating in this conference and promoting HCI in Sri Lanka. With the right support and resources, Sri Lanka’s HCI community has the potential to become a leading player in the field, contributing to the development of new technologies, applications, and services that benefit society and the economy. Colombo SIGCHI Community’s success is just the beginning of what promises to be a bright future for HCI in Sri Lanka.
