Members of the pro-government Federation of Self-employed came to Olcott Mawatha on Friday to replace the President's poster which was pulled down during the UNP-led joint opposition protest. But they faced a problem. The new canvass they brought was much larger than the iron frame. Yesterday they enlarged the frame. Pic by Susantha Liyanawatte

Tough laws to rein in errant Treasury officials
Sri Lanka is introducing tough new laws to hold all ranks of Treasury officials accountable with penalties and possible jail terms if guilty of fraud or misappropriation. This is through the proposed Public Finance Act which will also include new Financial Regulations to be introduced in April, replacing the existing regulations introduced by the British colonial administration.
'Reports of my survival may be exaggerated'
It was like a scene from a futuristic thriller, with the mood that unpredictable fusion of passion, bravery and fear that drove last year's revolutions in North Africa. As I left the pandemonium of Tahrir Square in Egypt's capital, I was not surprised to bump into the familiar figure of a woman with an American accent and a distinctive eye-patch.

Taking great strides in her silent world
She feels and smells the rain, but doesn’t hear the patter of raindrops on the roof or against the window-pane. Pretty Shenuka Dias, encouraged and supported by her parents, however, has not let her hearing impairment be in the way of achieving what she wanted. Turning 29 on February 28, she is standing tall on her own and works from her home at Rajagiriya as a graphics designer.

Vaas bats for the clubs
Always there is the other side of the coin. There is another school of thought in any subject and cricket is no different. Yet, there is one common ground, both parties talk of the same common goal. They both are concerned and they both talk about sustaining local cricket and making it attuned to cater to the needs of the demand of international cricket.

Being punished for going to court -- Focus on Rights

The argument is put forward by some that if the current administration had taken steps to put its democratic record to right, post war, perhaps the scrutiny that we see now in regard to what is loosely defined as accountability, would not have been evidenced in all its intensity.

That Perine power
No one has ever made me feel quite as short as Perine Fernando does. At 5'11, the first (and so far only) Sri Lankan 'super' model to strut along the haute couture runways of Paris, London and Milan, Perine is a local legend and an international celebrity.

Portuguese power in Jaffna
The present king Periyapulle alias Vegarajasekeram, had a son. He was a young prince, but he had been sentenced to death. This prince had been saved by a person named Simon Sinnyo. A painting depicting this incident had been discovered in the Maha Saman Devale in the Sabaragamuwa district. The painting is done on stone.
