Ruwala Nature & Adventure Park, Kalpitiya

Naomi De Soysa (Grade 6 L), Ladies College, Colombo

My family and I did not stay at Ruwala Resort for very long but during the short time we stayed there we had the most wonderful experience. The moment I came to Ruwala I felt right at home. When I saw the lovely blue swimming pool, I knew I was going to have a great holiday.

Ruwala is a quiet place where you can rest and relax your mind. If you are an animal and nature lover, this is the perfect vacation spot for you. My first few hours at Ruwala I spent outdoors. Ruwala has the most wonderful gardens and they grow their own vegetables.

There are hammocks in the garden where I read books and ate fruit. We went to see the Kalpitiya town, including St. Anne’s Church, Talawila, the Coal Power Plant and a huge windmill. In the evening I swam in the pool. Feeling refreshed, I changed and went to eat dinner. I love seafood and was not disappointed with the menu.

The next morning I was woken up by the sound of birds singing and quickly got dressed to go dolphin watching. I was so excited! It was fun to get into the boat and ride out into the waves. The sea was very calm and perfect for dolphin watching. We went way out into the sea. We had an excellent dolphin tracker, Uncle Maithri, with us. I was very sure we would see dolphins.

In a little while we saw something jumping far away and then we ended up in the middle of a pod of about 1000 dolphins! The Spinner dolphins were brilliant, jumping and twirling in the air, like they were performing in a circus. A little later, another girl and I climbed onto the front of the boat, our legs over the side of the boat. Sometimes dolphins would come and knock on our legs for fun!

The day was actually my birthday and so it was a perfect birthday present! A birthday I will never forget, thanks to Ruwala. When we were having brunch, Aunty Anudhini and Uncle Maithri surprised me with birthday cupcakes and everybody sang Happy Birthday.

My holiday was so much fun, but sadly it was then time for us to leave Ruwala and I am determined to go there again. It was the holiday of my dreams!
