Player payments likely to be completed next week

By S.R. Pathiravithana

Sri Lanka Cricket is hoping to complete the players’ payments by next week. In December last year the players received a part payment of 42.36 per cent directly from the ICC. By then the SLC owed its players approximately US$ 4.3 million.

Thereafter according to SLC sources the amount was brought up to 48% by their local employers subsequently. When the ICC paid the money to the individual players SLC assisted the world cricket organization by providing them with the necessary bank account details. The players’ payment was negotiated between the Federation of International Cricketers' Association (FICA) and the Sri Lankan Players Association (SLCA).

Recently the cash tight SLC obtained a loan from the Bank of Ceylon to the tune of Rs. 600 million to peddle over their present difficulties and also to pay its cricketers. Now the authorities at SLC are seriously looking at finishing the balance payment of 52 per cent by next week. The amount is said to be around Rs. 400 million.

SLC ran into financial problems after running up debts of $32.5 million to finance the building of two international stadiums in Hambantota and Pallekele, and to renovate the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, for the World Cup. All three stadiums have since been handed over to the military because the board was struggling to maintain them.
