Salgado - Thurstan's Mr. dependable still ahead

Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular School boy Cricketer of the Year contest
Thurstan skipper Sajeewa Salgado who leads the Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year competition has let his bat do the talking by surpassing the milestone of 1000 runs in the ongoing schools cricket season. Salgado so far has accumulated 1069 runs in 23 innings off 14 matches averaging over 53.

Salgado reached his landmark 1000 runs during the match against Royal College with a timely knock of 80 runs in the drawn game at Reid Avenue. However Salgado had to experience a major blow when he was dismissed cheaply for 11 runs in the first innings where his team was shot out for a cheap total. Salgado made amendments to compose a fluent knock which enabled him to reach the magical 1000 runs, a milestone any schoolboy cricketer would wish to reach in his career.

Salgado has hit four centuries and five fifties to his account while striking his best of 142 runs against Mahanama College, Colombo. Interestingly according to information and statistics provided by his school officials Salgado has scored much of his runs which is 670 off boundaries.

His performances run on par with his dominance in the Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 for the eight consecutive week. Last week he received 1611 votes which strengthened his total to 5519 overall while Maris Stella skipper Angelo Jayasinghe still is placed second. The notable progress for the week in the All-Island category was of Madhawa Fernando of Royal Panadura. He toppled team mate Charith Ruchiranga to steal the third place while Shiran Anuruddhika of De Mazenod too made progress to the top. Lakshan Edirisinghe of Zahira was another competitor to lose his spot. Rest of the competitors remain in their respective places as they were last week.

Sasindu Perera of St. John’s College Panadura with 726 votes to his account still heads the Emerging Schools competition while the remaining competitors are as they are from last week. Nishan Perera of Lyceum International came out with a stunning result as he managed to oust Lakshan Kodagoda of Gateway International from the leadership of the International Schools category. Perera received a staggering amount of 4197, the most number of votes received in this year’s competition in any category so far. Kodagoda moved down to second place with a heavy deficit of 1160 votes. To make the competition more interesting readers can send in as many coupons as they wish until May 23.
Readers prizes go to: 1. Sepala Jayasekara, 10B82L, National Housing Scheme, Raddolugama. 2. Eranda Samarawickrema, No. 10, Police Quarters, Panadura. 3. M.M. Sumanasena, 668/2, Etul Kotte, Kotte. 4. Rasika Perera, 24/34A, 2nd Lane, Kadawatha Road, Kalubowila.
