Facebook unveils mobile app for feature phones

Facebook has partnered with 14 mobile carriers globally to launch a new application for accessing the social networking site on feature phones. The Facebook for Feature Phone app, developed by Snaptu, represents a bid to reach the majority of mobile users who don’t use smartphones.

Facebook, which has more than 500 million active users, said there are currently 200 million active users who access Facebook through mobile devices and the people who surf Facebook on mobiles are twice as active on Facebook as non-mobile users.

The app will work on more than 2,500 Java-enabled phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG and other manufactures, the company said. Like Facebook apps for iPhone and other smartphones, Facebook’s new app allows feature phone owners to synchronise their contacts, view photo and friend updates, and navigate everything through a home screen.
