Magistrate orders arrest of errant trader

Sequel to child's death

The Kurunegala Magistrate on Friday ordered the OIC Polpithigama to arrest and produce in Court the owner of a shop who sold a dated packet of milk to a customer which resulted in the death of Isanka Divanjani.

Isanka Divanjani a pre-school student from Maeliya died at the ICU of the Kurunegala hospital on December 25 consequent to consuming milk from an outdated packet. According to Isanka’s mother Chitra Udayangani (28), she bought the packet of milk when her daughter had said she was thirsty, little realizing it would result in her (daughter’s) death.

At midnight the child complained of severe stomach cramps and was admitted to a private hospital. Later she was transferred to the Polpithigama hospital where she was diagnosed to be in a serious condition and rushed to the Kurunegala hospital.

The child was put on saline drip and treated for eight days…, unfortunately she died on the 25 th.
