A rare book on snakes

A rare collector's book, the 152-page 'Snakes of Sri Lanka: A Coloured Atlas' by Anslem de Silva with exquisite drawings by Jayantha Jinasena is available at Vijitha Yapa Bookshops for Rs. 10,000 each.

Eminent Professor Kraig Adler who is Chairman of the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior and former Vice Provost for Life Sciences at Cornell University (USA) has stated: De Silva's great book includes a lengthy summary of the archaeological record and folklore of Sri Lankan snakes and Jayantha Jinasena's exquisite coloured drawings, surely among the most lifelike illustrations of serpents ever produced.

A century from now, this folio atlas will be mentioned together with Patrick Russell's 'Indian Serpents' and Joseph Fayrer's 'Thanatophidia of India' as the greatest works ever produced on the snake fauna of the Indian subcontinent.
