Dane in foreign spider web

Large hairy spiders which were recovered from a Danish national by a Wildlife Department team in a raid were not native to Sri Lanka but were smuggled from another country, an official said.

These spiders or tarantulas belonged to three species and were probably being reared by the Dane in his Hikkaduwa residence, Wildlife official Upali Padmasiri who led the raid said.

He said Sri Lanka had seven types of tarantulas with five of them being endemic. The suspect was released on bail but his passport was surrendered to courts pending further investigations while the tarantulas were sent to the National Zoological Gardens.
