MTV ‘expresses’ views

A.J.B. Anghie of Colombo writes…....

Those who have watched MTV English news recently would have noticed that according to the news readers, the President ‘express views’; the ministers ‘express views’; the Opposition Leader ‘expresses views’; politicians on the election trail ‘express views’; the man in the street and housewives ‘express views’; every Punchi Banda and Podi Menike ‘express views’.

In these news bulletins, nobody ‘says’ anything, ‘states’ anything or ‘comments’ on anything. No one gives an interview, issues a statement or presents an opinion. They all – you’ve guessed it – ‘express views’! The lack of variety and originality of expression and the unimaginative and limited vocabulary of these talking heads leaves one bored to tears and of course has provoked me to ‘express my views’.
