American Beauty’ to highlight family life

Under the theme 'family life', the weekly film screening at the American Centre will screen Academy awarded 'American Beauty' on Thursday November 13 at 6 pm. The debut direction of Sam Mendes, the film narrates the dark side of an American family, and about the nature and price of beauty in a culture obsessed with outward appearances.

Starring Annette Bening, Kevin Spacey, Mena Suvari, Thora Birch and Wes Bentley, the film was released in 1999. Lester Burnham (Spacey) is a 42-year-old man in a severe mid-life crisis. His fourteen-year career at a magazine is going nowhere, his perfectionist realtor wife, Carolyn (Bening), drives him crazy, and his angst ridden teenage daughter, Jane (Birch) barely communicates with him, simply writing him off as "weird."

This, at least in part, is due to Lester's prior lack of attention towards Jane. Carolyn begins to have an affair with the local real-estate giant, which begins as envy arising out of frustration at not being able to compete with him, then transfor ...

With three nominations, 'American Beauty' won five Academy awards for Best Picture Best Director Best Actor in a Leading Role Best Cinematography and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

It also had another 82 wins and 63 nominations at numerous other award ceremonies.
