The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India (IITM) and SLIIT entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance mutual interests in the fields of education and research, to open up new study pathways for students and to contribute to increased international cooperation among nations.

IITM is well-known for its technical education, basic and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial consultancy on a national and international scale. The institute is recognised as India’s number one engineering university and was recently titled an Institute of Eminence. It is a residential Institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students, and 1250 administrative and support staff, as well as sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centers in various engineering and pure sciences disciplines.

As a stepping stone to revitalise Sri Lanka’s dormant IT sector, SLIIT was established in 1999. The Institute has flourished into a non-state institution that not only opens avenues for students to get their higher education in a variety of IT and other sectors, but also plays a major role in the country’s export economy. SLIIT was the first Sri Lankan Institute to be accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Further it’s a University Grants Commission (UGC) recognised Institute and a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the International Association of Universities (IAU). Established as a key component of Sri Lanka’s higher education system, SLIIT has made quite a name for itself having over 96% of its grads to be currently employed in their field of study.

By signing this Memorandum of Understanding, SLIIT and IITM have agreed to collaborate in the areas of teaching, research and development, and consultancy studies; providing opportunities for cultural and intellectual enrichment for both staff as well as for students; and similarly in promoting the exchange of programs designed for the mutual benefit of both institutions. On behalf of SLIIT, Prof. Lalith Gamage, Vice-Chancellor, SLIIT, Prof. Nimal Rajapakse, Deputy Vice-Chancellor SLIIT and Prof. Pradeep Abeygunawardhana were present at the MoU signing ceremony while Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean Global Engagement, and Prof. Preethi represented IITM.

Prof. Lalith Gamage, Vice-Chancellor of SLIIT, stated, “It is a great pleasure and honour to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between SLIIT and IITM, a well-renowned education institution in India.  This marks the formalisation of a true partnership that will integrate and enhance the development of relevant fields of higher education, as well as help nurture more local talent in multiple disciplines, opening up new opportunities. I’d like to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey for their efforts in making this agreement a reality, and I wish the collaboration much success.”

Sharing his thoughts about the event Prof. Raghu said that “IITM is looking forward to welcoming students and faculty from SLIIT to IIT Madras under various programmes. As the relationship strengthens, joint development of educational programmes will be pursued”.

This MOU was the result of the the Information Communication and Technology Agency (ICTA) Sri Lanka’s global university program. ICTA launched the Global University Reach programme with the goal of expanding ICT education in the country. The main aim was to produce high-quality graduates while also improving local universities’ research and innovation. From ICTA, Mr. Sachindra Samararathne,

Associate Chief Digital Economic Officer, Prof. Pradeep Abeygunawardhana, Director/Technology Diffusion  and Ms. Chadika Yahampath, Senior Manager graced the signing ceremony with their presence. SLIIT is thrilled about this collaboration with IITM and looks forward to working with the Institute for many years to come.
