Competitive exam to recruit new teachers: Ed. Minister

View(s):

The Education Ministry has decided to stop a plan to recruit around 22,000 graduate teachers and it will instead conduct a competitive exam to select the required number of teachers.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said they believe the scheme will be more beneficial as they can recruit the required number of teachers according to the vacancies and the respective fields.

The number of teachers to be recruited through the competitive exam would be decided based on the requirements.

Under the earlier system the Government planned to enlist 22,000 graduates for a one year training programme at National Institute of Education. After they completed this programme, they were required to sit for an exam.

The Minister also said, under another programme around 8,000 students who passed out from the National Colleges of Education would become qualified teachers soon. Accordingly the required number of teachers would vary, he added. (WI)
