This year’s university applicants are eligible to apply for four new subjects, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Sampath Amaratunge said, at a media conference on August 30.

Accordingly the subjects are; Financial Economics and Creative Music Technology and Production at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, English Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Uva Wellassa and Banking and Insurance at the University of Vavuniya.

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is also introducing the Faculty of Computing for university applicants, with the subjects of Computer Science, Information Systems and Software Engineering.

With the 2021 A/L results released on August 28, Prof. Amaratunge and Shalika Ariyaratne, UGC Deputy Secretary and Head of the University Admissions Branch, took part in the media conference to speak about this year’s application process to state universities.

University applications will be made available from September 5 onwards, on the website www.ugc.ac.lk, and the deadline is September 23.

The UGC also issued a handbook, which was provided to selected book stores on September 3, and a notice about the applications was published in Sunday newspapers in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

The handbook can also be downloaded from the UGC website, obtained from the UGC premises and ordered through post. With 42,519 vacancies available in the universities this year, the UGC expected student numbers to increase.

Applicants would be able to seek advice on filling application forms from the UGC Information Centre on 0112695301 and 0112695302. The centre is also open on weekends from 8.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. (SJA)
