Faculty of Technology students of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University holds an Innovative technological exhibition

The higher education and training are important predictors of efficiency enhancement, and the younger generation of Sri Lanka must be equipped with necessary technical skills and competencies to shift its economy from agriculture to industry-based and to fulfil the demands of the country to be self-sustained. Thus, supply of adequate technological education to the youth is vital.

With the primary goal of producing graduates inculcating capabilities needed for the country’s development drive and to address the country’s demand for Professional Technologists, the Faculty of Technology (FOT) was founded as the 10th Faculty of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU). It has been established with two academic departments; the Department of Engineering Technology and the Department of Biosystems Technology and offers four degree programmes; Biomedical Instrumentation Technology, Construction Technology, and Building Services Technology and Information and Communication Technology that are nationally relevant and directly employable.

As the undergraduates of the Faculty of Technology, students always come up with innovative novel ideas and initiatives and are passionate about the technology. The curiosity they have on cutting edge technologies and the fundamental skills they obtained within the first year of the faculty, it embarked the beginning of the first freshers’ exhibition that showcases the skills of future technologists. Thus, students from new intake 39 of the Faculty of Technology organised a technical exhibition with the objective of disseminating their skills and knowledge and showed how innovative ideas leading to develop products needed to mankind. It enabled the acquisition of varied skills leading to the development of multiple competencies required to become a successful technologist.

This exhibition was declared open on 30th June at KDU premises by the Vice chancellor of KDU, Major General Milinda Peiris. It comprised of numbers of exhibit items, including Advanced oscilloscope, Arduino based ECG trainer kit, Voice controlled wheelchair, New concrete brick using waste materials, Reduction of traffic congestion of KDU, floating solar power panel, Sensor-based gas leakage detector system, Neutral temperature AC system, Loop heat pipe solar hot water heater and Electrical wiring trainer kit. The items provided sustainable solutions for current energy demands, garbage accumulation, traffic congestion and to reduce the extra cost for imported items that used in student laboratory practical and many more.

By addressing the gatherings, the Vice Chancellor emphasised the significance of the technical education to find the solutions for the society which has faced crisis situation. He is optimistic about the performance of technology students and impressed with their outcomes and advised to initiate start-ups based on their developments. Dr. Prasanna Premadasa, Dean FOT and staff members provided necessary leadership and guidance for the students to make this event success.
