The Faculty of Humanities and Sciences of SLIIT School of Nursing, encompassing multiple accreditations and degree programmes, prepare the next generation of nurses for long-lasting careers and international pathways.

Programmes offered by the SLIIT School of Nursing are approved by Sri Lanka’s Private Health Sector Regulatory Council (PHSRC), an entity governed by the Ministry of Health, and the degrees are recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC), Sri Lanka.

The School of Nursing offers the SLIIT Higher Diploma in Nursing, a three-year programme which has obtained the NVQ Level 6 by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), Ministry of Skills Development & Vocational Training, Sri Lanka.

Based on SLIIT’s collaboration with Deakin University, students who complete their Higher Diploma can join the Deakin Bachelor of Nursing final year programme. Upon completion, students graduate and obtain the Deakin Bachelor of Nursing, opening doors for the nurses to be able to practice locally or internationally.

The degree has also received the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board Accreditation, offering students a guaranteed and unique pathway as registered nurses with the Australian Nurses and Midwifery Board. With the Australian health sector recognised as fast-growing and abounding with employment opportunities, Sri Lankan students who graduate with Deakin’s Bachelor of Nursing have the option of migrating as healthcare professionals.

The SLIIT School of Nursing also affords opportunities for the government sector nursing cadre who wish to enhance their careers.

Through SLIIT’s partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), UK, government sector registered nurses with one year of experience are offered the unique opportunity to gain a world-recognised qualification – the BSc (Hons) Nursing (International) from LJMU.

BSc (Hons) Nursing (International) programme spans 16 months, inclusive of a six-month bridging programme for the nurses and the final year.

Upon competition of the programme, students can propel their career forward through promotions, salary increments or even migrate overseas as recognised healthcare professionals.

Through LJMU, students receive access to the university’s sophisticated CANVAS learning management system.  The online platform creates a dynamic, digitally enabled learning environment for students with easy access to lectures, study and resource material, including the LJMU library, at their fingertips. Students have the facility of uploading their assignments/ course work through the system and can even join lectures in real-time.

Recognising clinical practice is a pivotal part of nursing education, the SLIIT School of Nursing offers students clinical placements in the programme at Hemas Hospital. Students have the opportunity of putting the knowledge and skills they have acquired from campus into practice with real patients under the guidance of registered and senior nurses.

The SLIIT School of Nursing is also in the process of obtaining approval from the Ministry of Health, enabling student nurses’ opportunities for placements at government hospitals such as the Kaduwela Medical Officer of Health and the National Institute of Mental Health, Mulleriyawa.

Ensuring students receive a significant educational accomplishment, they are trained by an experienced panel of lecturers who hold master’ and above qualifications and have practical experience in addition to nursing education.

Nursing students can experience excellent training facilities at SLIIT, including a sophisticated and well-equipped lab and other state-of-the-art amenities to further their education.

Student nurses can also showcase their knowledge and participate in the annual research conference ‘SICASH’ organised by SLIIT’s Faculty of Humanities and Sciences. Subject-specific papers can be submitted for publication and recognition.

To enrol in SLIIT’s Higher Diploma in Nursing, students need 3 passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Science stream and credit passes in English, Maths, and Science at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination.
