3000 secondary level schools to be developed under new project

The Education Ministry is to replace the 1000 new national schools project with a plan to develop 3000 national secondary level schools.

The programme will soon get underway and the schools will be selected by the central government and the provincial authorities.

Ministry sources said the new programme will prevent any conflict over trying to take over provincial schools under the central government, thereby avoiding any violation of the 13th Amendment of the Constitution where certain powers have been vested to the provincial council.

The sources said the development of 3000 national secondary level schools were seen as a better project as it would serve a wider range of students.

Accordingly the 1000 national schools project would come to a gradual halt.

Under the progamme the number of national schools was to be increased to 1000 from the existing 373 schools.  Around 25 schools had been completed and the construction of 100 more schools was underway. This would bring the number of national schools in the country to around 500.

The 1000 national schools project was launched under the “Vistas of prosperity and splendour” manifesto of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The inauguration ceremony of 1000 national schools project was held at the Siyambalanduwa Maha Vidyalaya in Monaragala in January this year.

Under the plan, national schools were to be built in each Divisional Secretariat division with a maximum of 3000 students in each school.
