Sri Lanka as the greatest hospitable nation, hospitality comes from our blood. Our nation does not think twice to help each other in times of distress and difficulties. To add an immense value to these words, the students of Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Management and Science Institute (MSI) have organised a series of CSR project under the topic of “Make Sri Lanka a Better Place”.

UN’s Sustainable Goals were the main consideration during the planning and organising process of the entire project. The modern world is highly focused on Sustainable Development Goals in order to implement positive impact on world economy, environment and the societies. Under their sustainable development goals, we can identify no poverty, zero hunger, good health, quality education and well-being and life on land. Our teams expected that each project will provide a short-term solution for the Sri Lankan community to achieve sustainable development goals while developing long-term solutions to overcome poverty, hunger and unhealthiness and other major issues considered under sustainability.

The students decided to engage in the CSR project provincially by making four main groups including Central Province, Southern Province and two groups from Western Province.

“Life of Giving” was the first event took place on 20th of June 2022 at Buonvista Elderly Home in Galle as a Donation Program and a cleaning campaign. The event held at the Buonvista Elderly Home while ensuring the good health and well-being of the elders by conducting the cleaning programme and entertaining all the occupants of the elders’ home with live music as well. Apart from their main objectives, they also wanted to facilitate any other assistance directly or indirectly for activities which seek to promote CSR activities within the community. They also expected to enhance their capabilities in capacity building, standard setting, planning, monitoring and evaluation.

The first team of Western Province engaged in the “Life Stream” Blood Donation Campaign on 23rd of June 2022 at Korathota Raja Maha Viharaya in Kaduwela City. A Free Eye Checkup Campaign was also taking place on the same day with the partnership of Vision Care Malabe Branch. Under the sustainable concept, students wanted to contribute towards promoting good health and well-being of the people of our community. The event was successfully held with a lot of participants and the students wanted to improve the awareness among the community while improving their team spirit and leadership qualities. The team members are pleased to inform that they have fulfilled their responsibility towards the community while setting a good example for humanity.

The crippling inflation is sending the cost of basic goods skyrocketing day by day. The current situation in the country impacts badly on majority of people. After considering the current situation of Sri Lanka, the team representing the Central Province organised an event to distribute a bundle of essential dry ration items to a selected number of families in a rural area, under the topic of “Helping Hands”. The event took place on 19th of July, 2022 at Labuwelpola Temple in Wattapola. In a situation where many of the Sri Lankans are facing financial problems, the team members strongly believed, this project would help some people to fulfill at least one of their meal requirements and also in the hopes of making the public more aware about the situations of these struggling families so that more people would think to help them in the future as well.

The second team of Western Province named their project as “Care Club” and they were engaged in a Donation Program which was held on 30th of July 2022 at Samadhi Child Development Center in Pasyala Weyangoda. The team expected to provide basic educational needs. Our students spent their time by playing games alongside with the children to bring back smiles on their beautiful faces. All the students are very thankful towards our director Mr. Samantha Peiris and our lecturer Mr. Suranga Thennakoon, for their support.

The students of the Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management aimed to set an example for the other university students, school students and the Sri Lankan community to come up with great and new innovative ideas where all of us can help each other during this economic crisis and in the future as well.

Based on the experiences that the students have received during the series of CSR Projects expected to improve their leadership skills, team spirit, planning and organising skills, coordinating skills, project handling skills and many other important skills through the events and this can be considered as one of the most valuable learning opportunities of their lives. And finally, they want to prove to the world that the greatest hospitable nation is not going to give up trying even during these difficult times.
