How Sri Lankan students can future-proof their careers

The world of work is changing at an increasingly rapid pace. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation are making many jobs obsolete while also creating jobs that have never existed before.

We know that technologies will continue to evolve and business conditions will change with them. It’s important for those at the start of their working lives to develop a mindset that will prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the future. According to analysis by the Institute of Policy Studies Sri Lanka , it’s the highly educated who will benefit from jobs created by technology.

The Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has been created with this new world of work in mind. It’s a unique, combined degree with a focus on in-demand skills such as critical and creative thinking, invention, complexity, innovation, future scenario building, and entrepreneurship. Students can pair the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (BCII) with a range of core degrees*, selected from faculties throughout UTS as they develop highly valued, leading-edge capabilities. This enables them to enhance professional studies in core areas such as Business, Engineering, or IT, for example, with the future focused skill set developed in the BCII.

Cross-disciplinary and collaborative

Professor Anne Cranny-Frances, Adjunct Professor in the School of Communications at UTS, says, “In designing this course, we are coming from the viewpoint that many people have arrived at these days. The problems we have in our society, in every society globally, are so big and complex that they can’t be answered by any one discipline. What we need are teams of people bringing the knowledge and skills from each of their own disciplines together.”

This ability to collaborate was listed among the most important skills needed for 21st Century success in a recent article in Forbes magazine. The other critical skills included in the article were resilience in the face of setbacks, agile thinking, good verbal and written communication, creativity, problem solving, leadership, negotiation, and mastery of technology.

Creating the jobs and
opportunities of the future

No matter which core degree has been chosen, the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation is designed to place graduates at the innovative forefront of their profession. As they develop and realise their own projects, BCII students are empowered to create the jobs and opportunities of the future as they step up to their industry’s demands for a more creative workforce.Throughout their degree, they benefit from a range of industry experiences, real-world projects, and self-initiated proposals, which equip them to address the complexities of a changing world.

They become lifelong innovators, entrepreneurs, creative thinkers, and change-makers.
