Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya, a provincial girls school with 1500 students, lacked 150 chairs and tables for senior students at the start of the academic year.

Colombo East SLFP Organiser and Municipal Council member Pradip Jayewardene was made aware of this situation by the school’s Principal R.P. Wijesinghe.

Mr Jayewardene informed Delmege Forsyth and Company’s Former Chairman Ricky Mendis, who volunteered to donate funds for 100 sets of student chairs and tables.

The donation took place at a ceremony held on January 27th. The cheque for the tables and chairs were received by Mrs. Wijesinghe. Each set cost 5700 Rupees. “I was deeply shocked and saddened when I heard about the plight of around 100 students of Sujatha Vidyalaya who had to sit on the ground and follow their studies,” said Mr Mendis.

“I was happy that I had the means to provide them with chairs and desks, so they could continue their education in a more comfortable environment.”
